Guest Speaker (Online): Robert Strauss on his new book John Marshall: The final founder
Robert Strauss (author of the 2016 James Buchanan biography Worst. President. Ever.) brings his research, style and wit to the subject of John Marshall. Strauss calls Marshall the Zelig or the Forrest Gump of the Founders in that he was everywhere. He was a junior officer at Valley Forge, the leader of the House of Burgesses to get Virginia to ratify the Constitution, the point man in France thwarting the XYZ Affair, the Congressman who got to eulogize Washington at Independence Hall ("First in War; First in Peace.") to being Secretary of State and leading the building of Washington DC when Adams thought the climate too hot; to his 34-year turn as Chief Justice, cementing the nation by forcing the judiciary up to the status of the legislative and executive branches.
